CARPENTER FUNDRAISING & VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

ANNUAL GIVING CAMPAIGN (PFC FUNDRAISER):

The Annual Giving Campaign raises over half of PFC's operating budget, funding enrichment programs, additional teachers for smaller class sizes, teacher support (wish lists), aides (office, administrative & safety), beautification & more. It is the generosity of Carpenter families, alumni, and Studio City residents that support this endeavor. Volunteer positions include:

ASSEMBLIES (PTA):

Sponsored by Carpenter's PTA, this program offers teachers and students a series of educational and entertaining presentations in the areas of science, history, nutrition, dance and space exploration, among others. Volunteer positions include:

Gala (PFC Fundraiser):

This Gala orchestrated entirely through the effort and partnership of hundreds of committed school and business community volunteers, is one of Carpenter's largest and most eagerly anticipated events, as well as one of its most successful fundraisers.

BAKE SALES (PTA Fundraiser):

The PTA holds several bake sales each year, including one on Back-to-School Night and another at the spring Open House. Proceeds from the bake sales support many PTA service related programs. Volunteer positions include:

BEAUTIFICATION (PFC):

Twice a year, parents volunteer a weekend day to refresh the Carpenter campus both inside and out, ensuring a pleasant and safe learning environment for all students. This program is made possible by the effort of community volunteers and funding from PFC.

BOOK EXCHANGE (PTA):

The Book Exchange is conducted in early spring. The PTA collects thousands of gently used books from the Carpenter School community. Every student at Carpenter is then invited to select a "new" book and Carpenter's teachers choose as many books as needed to enrich their classroom libraries. All remaining books are donated to BookEnds (www.bookends.org), which recycles children's books through student-run book drives and places them in schools and youth organizations. Over 20,000 books have been donated to youth organizations from this yearly Carpenter event.

BOOK FAIR (PTA Fundraiser):

Each year the Carpenter PTA presents the Scholastic Book Fair in conjunction with the Winter Holiday Program, providing the school community with a convenient way to stock up on your child's favorite grade-level bestseller books and gifts. While you are shopping, you can also support Carpenter's library and classroom needs with the purchase of an additional book. Volunteer positions include:

  • Pre and Post-Sale Set-Up and Clean Up

BOXTOPS 4 EDUCATION (All School Fundraiser):

Earn cash for your school through everyday activities like buying groceries! Clip Box Tops from hundreds of participating brands. Collection envelopes are located in the classrooms. www.boxtops4education.com

CARPENTER CARES (PTA):

The PTA coordinates the Carpenter Cares program, which supports those in the school community experiencing unforeseen extreme hardship. Meals, carpooling and homework help are the most frequently requested forms of support. COMMUNITY OUTREACH PROGRAMS (PTA):

Throughout the year, the Carpenter PTA takes leadership on many projects where students are encouraged to think about those who are less fortunate and actively take part in activities to assist them. Through community clothing, food and toy drives, students are asked to help collect items for those in need. Through grade-level programs, students are encouraged to participate in focused efforts to help families living in shelters, national programs such as the American Heart Association’s Jump for Heart and other outreach efforts. The Community Outreach Team also takes excess Lost & Found items, launders them and then redistributes the items at schools and shelters. We’re always looking for grade level chairs for outreach activities. Volunteer positions include:

DISTINGUISHED SPEAKERS PROGRAM FOR PARENTS (PTA):

(Formerly known as Parent Ed). The Carpenter PTA sponsors a series of free parent seminars presented by experts in the areas of child development, education and advocacy. In the past, sessions have covered such timely topics as childhood nutrition, standardized testing, navigating the magnet process, Internet safety and homework issues. Volunteer positions include:

  • Event hosts
  • Set-up and cleanup team members

ESCRIP (PFC Fundraiser):

By signing up your grocery loyalty cards with the various escrip programs, you can earn fundraising dollars for Carpenter at no cost to you. Just link your customer loyalty cards to Parents for Carpenter's member number and the stores will contribute a portion of your spending to PFC. This is by far the easiest way to raise money for our school - sign up once each year and for the next 12 months all you need to do is shop as usual with your store loyalty card (Ralphs and Vons are two key examples).

FIFTH GRADE SPONSORED FUNDRAISING (5th Grade):

Throughout the school year, a committee of 5th grade parents and teachers coordinate fundraising efforts such as pizza, drink and ice cream sales. Additionally, Innisbrook brand wrapping paper and gift selections are sold by the entire student body each Fall. All proceeds support 5th grade culmination activities and the Washington DC trip. Volunteer positions include:

GREEN TEAM (PTA):

Carpenter’s Green Team was formed to engage the entire community in assisting our transformation to a Green School. Through ongoing programs such as Trash Free Tuesday and our Annual Earth Day Fair, the team is focused on raising awareness of what the school community can do to change how we think about our environment, and ultimately, to try and decrease our carbon footprint. This committee also works to acquire resources and grants.

GREETING CARDS/ARTWORK FOR EDUCATION (PFC FUNDRAISER):

This program, which showcases student artwork on greeting cards sold in boxed sets, promotes the arts, fosters self-esteem and creates keepsakes that make wonderful gifts.

HALLOWEEN CARNIVAL (PTA Fundraiser):

Since 1947 the PTA Halloween Carnival has been a wonderful and fun Carpenter family tradition. The PTA's largest fundraiser, the Carnival raises the funds needed to sponsor many of the PTA programs. The Carnival is held on the last Friday before Halloween and is open to all Carpenter families, friends and the surrounding community. On the day of the Carnival, over one hundred parent volunteers set up and run the class booths. Approximately 20,000 prize donations are distributed each year. Volunteer positions include:

  • First Aid Station

HANDS ACROSS CARPENTER (PFC Fundraiser):

This fundraiser allows Carpenter families to sponsor colorful wall tiles decorated with their children's handprint and installed on campus.

HEALTHY KIDS COMMITTEE (PTA):

Carpenter Parents actively seek to improve our kids' health by providing guidance on healthy eating choices, exercise and fitness. Working with the school, the Healthy Kids Committee creates programs, activities and events designed to teach the community about making healthy and responsible choices.

LIBRARY COMMITTEE (PTA):

Library Committee volunteers work with the librarian in our library during the school day helping students select reading material and gathering information, or after school helping students with homework and offering. Library committee members also coordinate the Adopt-A-Book program wherein Carpenter families can donate books or fund the purchase of new books, library supplies, and special library materials. Volunteer Positions include:

MOVIE NIGHT:

Every fall, Carpenter hosts a free Movie Night on the field. Families are invited to bring a picnic or visit one of the food trucks lined up on Carpenter Avenue and then sit and watch a classic film under the stars. Volunteer positions include:

  • Audiovisual assistance
  • Event-set up and tear down teams
  • Security Team volunteers
  • Popcorn and Drink Sales

NEWSLETTER (PTA):

Carpenter PTA publishes an award-winning monthly newsletter "Every Child One Voice," which presents current PTA news, highlights, as well as an overview of key programs and events at Carpenter Community Charter. Volunteer Positions include:

  • Article writers
  • Photographers

PARTNERS IN EDUCATION (PIE) (PFC Fundraiser):

As a community-funded school, Parents for Carpenter establishes valuable relationships with businesses through the Partners in Education (PIE) committee. PIE is responsible for contacting these businesses, nurturing these relationships, as well as securing new partners. Businesses commit to a sponsorship level that meets their needs and are in turn given promotional opportunities within the Carpenter community. This committee oversees the sponsor banners on the Laurel Canyon fence. Also, individual classrooms create thank-you posters for our sponsors to show our gratitude for their partnership with our school community and we encourage families to patronize these businesses. With their support, we are able continue enriching the education of our children. Volunteer positions include:

  • Securing new partners
  • Securing returning partners
  • Class Thank You Card Coordinator

PICNICS: ALL-SCHOOL AND KINDERGARTEN (PFC and PTA):

These special PFC and PTA sponsored events, scheduled at the beginning of the school year, provide a fun and informal environment for new and returning families, teachers and administrators to socialize and enjoy some unstructured time together.

RECYCLING (PTA Fundraiser):

Carpenter's PTA has partnered with the Los Angeles Conservation Corps (LACC) to recycle glass, plastic, cans and bottles. The LACC supplies and services campus bins at no cost, allowing Carpenter PTA to use all funds generated to pay for various campus improvements. In addition, Carpenter supports an ongoing cell phone recycling program through www.phoneraiser.com. The Carpenter Media Lab collects and recycles inkjet cartridges.

REFLECTIONS ARTS RECOGNITION PROGRAM (PTA):

The PTA's annual Reflections program offers students the opportunity to create works of art for fun and recognition. Visual art, music composition, creative writing, photography and media arts are included. In its more than 30-year history, this national program has encouraged millions of students to create and appreciate all forms of art. Carpenter has a long and incredible history of success in the Reflections program, including state-wide and national finalists.

ROOM PARENTS:

The room parents act as a liaison between the teachers, the parent organizations and class families. Responsibilities vary based on each classroom's need, including assisting the teacher in coordinating field trips, collections for class gifts, Gala needs, producing the class yearbook and coordinating class volunteers.

SAFETY TEAM (PTA):

Funding from the PTA supports Carpenter's Safety Program, which ensures that the school possesses adequate supplies necessary for managing an emergency. Recently refurbished, our classroom and main campus earthquake supplies are among the best in the Valley. Our team also coordinates regular safety drills and maintains a thorough disaster preparedness action plan.

SHOPPING ON VENTURA RECEIPTS PROGRAM (PFC Fundraiser):

Carpenter families patronize participating stores on Ventura Boulevard (between Carpenter Avenue and Whitsett- this includes Trader Joes and Vons shopping receipts) qualifying the school to receive up to 10 percent of the receipts collected (up to $8,000.00 per calendar year) from the Studio City Improvement Association. The collection box is located in main office and marked Ventura Shopping receipts.

SPECIAL NEEDS COMMITTEE

Carpenter has an active community of children with special needs. The Special Needs Committee was formed to provide parents with information and assistance navigating the IEP process and is also dedicated to increasing understanding and tolerance in our community. The Committee hosts a weeklong Special Needs Awareness Week and also serves as a resource to the Special Needs Community through educational and advocacy efforts.

SPELLING BEE (PTA):

The PTA's annual Spelling Bee, celebrating the school's finest spellers from third grade through fifth grade, has become a favorite event of students and parents alike. Children compete within each classroom to become eligible for their grade level Spelling Bee. The final competitions are held in the auditorium and parents are invited to attend. Volunteer positions include:

SPIRIT STORE (PTA Fundraiser):

Sales of Carpenter-themed sportswear and logo items for children and adults, at Carpenter events throughout the year, allow the student body to show its school colors on "Spirit Fridays", as well as help support key PTA programs. Volunteer positions include:

  • Inventory Assistance

TARGET (All School Fundraiser):

By simply shopping with your Target(r) Visa(r) or Target(r) Card, a percentage of the amount of each purchase you make is donated back to our school. TEACHER APPRECIATION WEEK (PTA/PFC):

This weeklong school wide spring event includes students, parents and administrators in a special celebration of Carpenter's dedicated and amazing teaching staff.

TRACK MEET (PFC):

The track meet is an after school event that takes place once a year. 1st-5th graders participate in various track races under the supervision of Coach Marty Rackham. Volunteer positions include:

  • Set-up of the Grass Field
  • Participants Sign In
  • Man the Holding Area

VALET LINE

Parents volunteer to run the valet line at Carpenter Avenue to help parents dropping off and picking up kids before and after school. If you can help with directing traffic and assisting kids getting in and out of cars efficiently, we need your help. Volunteer positions include:

  • Afternoon Pick-up Volunteers

WALK-A-THON (PFC Fundraiser):

Each year, this school-wide event brings together teachers, students and parent volunteers in a walking marathon around the grassy field to raise funds. Volunteer positions include:

WALK TO SCHOOL WEDNESDAYS (PTA):

Carpenter participates in Walk To School Wednesdays on the first Wednesday of each month. Join us as we encourage all Carpenter families to Walk To School and enjoy all the benefits of a healthy lifestyle. Volunteer positions include: Wednesday Reward Coordinators Neighborhood Walking Captains
